Snooka Lakes

A complex approach up and through a series of timber ribs, slides and talus fields, leading to an incredible alpine bowl with 3 breathtaking turquoise lakes. A great basecamp within striking distance of other objectives; ridge walking, alpine climbing, goat viewing... and just generally exploring!

Start at Snooka Trailhead, follow the well-trafficked Snooka South trail up an asthetic "hump" feature to a brushy bowl/amphitheatre at about 400m. Sniff your way through the often-overgrown fern jungle up towards a small waterfall and lookout bluff. Traverse right out of the brush and into proper timber; continue upwards through nice timber, alternating with talus traverses (sometimes loose), until reaching the first major slide feature at about 800m. Carefully cross the sometimes-slippery slide channel, and continue through more alternating timber/talus until reaching the final slide feature at 950m. Climb the right-side of this slide feature for about 300m, until you emerge into the alpine - and more talus. Traverse at around 1400-1450m through mostly open heather and talus fields until final brief descent through flagged subalpine forest to first lake.

Trail is decently marked, but goes through inherently rough terrain. Expect some brush, loose talus, slippery sections, side-hilling, and route-finding. Allow 6-8 hours for experienced parties.
